Hunting Books

Find My Friends By Country Kid Publishing LLC $7.95
Every year, little hunters are taught to look at the woods in a new way -- to locate prints, to recognize a rub, to watch for deer. My First Deer Hunt follows one of those little hunters along as he learns the basics of hunting for that big buck. Through vivid photographs and simple language, th... Read More

Michael and Curtis Waguespack's "My First Deer Hunt" is the delightful story of a young boy who accompanies his father on a deer hunt. Though readers may cringe when imagining the images of guns or a deer carcass, they may be charmed to find that the authors employ neither of these. Instead, "My First Deer Hunt" shows how the characters track and watch the deer, leaving out all violence and resulting in a happy ending for all. This approach seems appropriate for the intended audience of young children, and is not meant to teach children gun safety or how to disembowl an animal. "My First Deer Hunt" could be enjoyed by any young child, hunter or not, since it shows the main character's curiosity and his enjoyment of a day out with Dad.
This book is a great way to introduce a child to not just hunting but also to observing animals in the wild. I like the fact that there are no guns pictured in the book and the emphasis is on tracking and observing. The pictures are captivating and the story has some good lessons while being fun to read. I've bought two for my little cousins who are definitely future outdoorsmen.

This book breaks from the typical children's stories and offers new excitement to kids. It went over great as a gift.
If this is truly a book about hunting, where are the firearms or archery equipment? I was truly disappointed when I received this book. I had wanted to use this book to help teach my youngest son the safety and ethical rules that true hunters follow. This includes the safe and responsible use of firearms, and the respect a hunter gives to the animal once it is harvested. This book provides none of the above. It shows a father and son stalking and tracking deer, but it does not show them hunting deer. A much better book on this topic is "When Pappy Goes Hunting", by Kurt and Christi Bonello.
I got this book and love it. It teaches me a lot about deer hunting. The best part is when he sees a big buck.

Having been shooting since the age of 12 (22 yrs) , I still learned a few things about firearms and learned a enough about hunting that I'm ready for my first hunting season. It discusses everything you need to know to get started and has a lot of excellent and informative photographs as well. Only down side is that it doesn't cover what to do with the animal once you've bagged it. Though I believe there is another book in the series that will cover dressing, skinning, butchering, cooking etc.
If you have never hunted but think you might like to, you need this book. It is a quick introduction covering all the bases with just the right amount of information to get you a good idea of what you're getting into. You'll find information on the animals you'll be hunting and the firearms you will need to bag them. I recommend this highly to any aspiring hunter. Anothr bonus is the wonderful photography. Soldier Blue By MGM (Video & DVD) $12.99
Nobody steals from Brandt Ruger and lives. With a stellar cast led by OscarÂ(r) winner* Gene Hackman (Unforgiven), EmmyÂ(r) winner Candice Bergen ("Murphy Brown") and Oliver Reed (Gladiator), this searing western fires round after round of emotional heat with a torrid frontier love triangle that can... Read More

Candice Bergen (Melissa Ruger) is a school teacher married to Brandt Ruger (Hackman). Brandt, a wealthy, powerful cattle man is incensed when he gets word of his wife's abduction at the hands of Frank Calder (Reed) and his outlaw gang. Frank intends her no harm though, he just wants her to tutor him so he can learn to read and write. Meanwhile, Hackman hears of the kidnapping while on a train to a hunting trip with 5 of his cohorts (two of them being G.D. Spradlin and Simon Oakland). He decides to change it to a manhunt. With powerful, long range rifles that can shoot accurately past 700 yards he and his buddies will pick off these outlaws. They leave the train on horseback and track the gang down. With scopes in place they start shooting from so far away the gang can't even see them. Spradlin is having a great time shooting men in cold blood until they sneak up on the snipers and shoot back. One of Hackman's party is killed and Spradlin decides he doesn't want to shoot at someone who's shooting back and leaves. Hackman won't quit though. He's had Frank in his sights more than once but wants to save him for last. Melissa falls for Frank. Hackman was worthless as a husband anyway. From the beginning it's hard to understand why she ever married the louse. Hackman and his fellow snipers are more like the bad guys than the outlaw gang. Lots of blood and violence, sadistic at times.
A good western which starts with a slap of rejection, twists to the kidnapping and then the hunting trip begins. As for the twist, well watch the movie!!
A nontypical western, this moves from the classic Hollywood western concept of two idiots standing up against one another in "duel mode" to the more realistic human mode "kill them where they stand by whatever means necessary" and does it quite well.

People who want escape from gritty reality will hate this film. For those who want to explore the metamorphosis of depictions of the darkest of human emotions from the 1960's on through the rest of the century, it is a reflection of life and reality at any time in history and an example of an attempt at portraying the realities of human nature by a midcentury filmmaker. Although this may not be as pleasing as films like "Oklahoma" or "Casablanca", it performed the mission I have attributed to it as well as, or better than, movies such as "Full Metal Jacket" or "The Green Berets".
I'm not a huge fan of the western genre but I don't mind seeing a good old wild west, action yarn. So when I watched this film a couple of years ago when it was airing on TV (about the only place it could be found at the time), I think was expecting a classic, fun, gun slinging shoot'em up but this film anything but fun.

The Hunting Party is very violent and in a meaningless way. In fact, that's all the movie is interested in: guns, gore and graphic carnage. The top notch cast (including Oliver Reed, Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, L.Q. Jones, and G.D. Spraldin), nice cinematography, and good production values, simply do not make up for the brutish mean streak in the script; Hackman and his hunting party simply lay back in the bushes and blow Reed's gang apart with their high-powered rifles. I admit this may be more realistic (would the party really want to get into an outright conflict?) but it's just a bit too much. The script has very little depth to it as well. It only makes the whole affair all the more pointless.

I'm sure that had there been a proper ending I would have given this a higher rating but the movie just stops. There's no resolution, no redemption, nothing. This left a really sour taste in my mouth and it'll likely do the same for you.

Darkhorse86
Copious metaphorical rhetoric is abundant in this dubious Western staring Oliver Reed, Candice Bergen and Gene Hackman. Director Don Medford is out of his element trying to pull off a logical yet meaningful story out of this monstrosity of events and filmed images. Themes of violence, love, obsessive hate, sadism and more run throughout this film but there is no logical conclusion to what has transpired. Oliver Reed's performance is ludicrous. The stalwart L. Q. Jones gives the only good performance in this film!

This book is a tiny, teeny, weeny little book - smaller than a Dr. Seuss book - for $21. NOT worth the money. I gave it two stars because it has a lot of nice pictures. However, the text is VERY simple - too simple for the eight-year-old I bought it for. Spend your money on something else.

This book is pretty comprehensive but not extremely well detailed. It is, I suppose, written for the beginner to intermediate level Hog Hunter. I was a little disappointed.
This is a great book for new hog hunters and has several useful thoughts for the more experienced. Of the 216 numbered pages 203 have informative content. Within the 203 pages are 97 B&W photos. The photos range in viewable quality from good to poor with only 8 photos being so difficult for me to discern what I was looking at that they were useless to view, however, the remaining photos were much appreciated. Well worth the $18 I paid but I'd be disappointed had I paid the $26.95 sugg. retail. The author sounds like he has the knowledge and experience to improve on this book by going into more detail about hunting the American wild boar. Also, I would've liked more information dealing with anatomy and shot placement and could have done without the chapter on hunting warthogs. I found this book to be an enjoyable read and I'm glad I have it in my library.
